Indigofera tinctoria bears the common name true indigo. This plant was one of the original sources of blue dye.

Dye is obtained from the processing of the plant’s leaves. They are soaked in water in order to convert the glycoside indican in the leaves to the blue dye indigotin. The precipitate from the fermented leaf solution is mixed with lye, pressed into cakes, dried, and powdered. The powder is mixed with other substances to produce different shades of blue and purple.

Blue is the colour most commonly associated with harmony, faithfulness, and confidence. Positive associations related to the color blue are: Intelligence, efficiency, serenity, duty, trust, logic, coolness, reflection, calm.
