It only takes 1000 years for nature to make stone out of a tree. If wood becomes buried by a mud slide, plate shift or other event, minerals like quartz and silicate are carried by water through the tree. Although the organic make up of the tree has been traded for a rock replica, the final result still visually resembles a tree. The colors of petrified wood are provided by elements in the water like manganese, copper, iron oxide and carbon. Arizona is home to a 146 square mile forrest of petrified trees. Petrified Forrest National Park near Holbrook, Arizona contains the remains of trees that fell over 200 million years ago.
